Dutch Caribbean Economies Too Dependent On Tourism

Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Aruba have to focus on more than just tourism. The economies of these three countries in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom remain vulnerable, because there are not enough other sources of income. This is according to special teams in charge of financial monitoring of the islands. These committees presented their findings on the year 2015 last Wednesday. BAM To Build Second Mega Pier

Construction company BAM will design and build a second mega pier in Curacao, at Otrobanda, Willemstad. The job contract value is over 25 million, it was announced on Thursday. The pier is located on the west side of the St. Anna Bay next to the in 1999 constructed Ernest ‘Jackie’ Voges mega pier. The pier will accommodate ships of the Oasis-class, the largest type of cruise ships. The scaffolding will be used for the mooring of cargo vessels, tankers and vessels for the offshore industry. Digicel Curacao announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire TRES Networks in Curaçao for an undisclosed sum. Curaçao Becomes Future Headquarters Of Caribbean Business Angel Network

Curaçao achieved a great milestone last week in Medellin, Colombia, where the Curaçao delegation took part at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC). Elgenia Pieternella, leader of the delegation, skillfully managed to negotiate and convert Curaçao into the headquarters of the Caribbean Business Angel Network. Cft Chairman Age Bakker: “Curaçao Should Continue On The Current Path”

The Board of financial supervision Curaçao and Sint Maarten has issued a positive advice on the 2016 budget of Curaçao. The Cft deems the budget realistic and there are visible signs of economic growth. ‘One-Stop Security’ Agreement Amongst Airports Of Dutch Caribbean Islands

Representatives of the aviation industry of the Dutch Caribbean islands Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire and Sint Maarten, met to finalize the ‘One-Stop Security’ agreement. As of mid-2016, transfer passengers traveling between the Dutch Caribbean islands will no longer need to undergo a secondary screening at Curaçao International Airport. UTS: profit over 2015, decrease in turnover

Last year, the United Telecommunications Group (UTS) has made a profit of 40.6 million gulden, despite the fact that the turnover has decreased drastically, again. This was reported Saturday by mr Paul de Geus, the manager of the telecom company. He also announced that as of April, customers will have one month longer to pay their bill. Recently the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) launched a new online tool, the ‘Tourism Insight’ active report to provide key data and statistics on Curaçao tourism. Tourism: North American Region Increased By 8%

Stay over arrivals from North America increased by 8% in January with a total of 8.585 visitors compared to the 7.936 visitor arrivals in January 2015. The United States with 5.155 stay over arrivals recorded a 2% increase. This year’s performance from the US market is relatively stable compared to last year. We can clearly see the importance of adequate airlift to increase visitor arrivals from the USA. Canada recorded a 20% increase with 3.430 stay over arrivals this January 2016.
